Get some objects that are familiar to your child, like a hairbrush, a favourite toy, shoe or doll. Put each object into a pillowcase and let your buddy feel the shape of it through the pillowcase. Can they guess what it is?
Get together a collection of small household items (15-20) and put them on a tray or table. Look at the items for 1-2 minutes, then cover the objects up and ask the children to remember what they saw.
Set up a photo treasure hunt by making up some clues (or use our examples as a start!) and send off your buddy with their digital camera. It will keep you amused for hours or as long as the batteries last! If you want to make it harder you might like to make up clues or riddles that point to a particular object.
Make up your own clues! What about… Something red, a funny face, something old, a plane, a bird, something to eat, two things that rhyme, a mystery object (that you have to guess)
Make an obstacle course using anything you can find, garden furniture, blankets, books, cushions etc. If you have a stopwatch try timing the circuit to see who can do it in the quickest time. And don’t forget to tidy up aftewards!
Balancing objects on your head can be hard but fun. Be careful what object you try out as you wouldn’t want to break anything, try to choose things like books. Walk the length of the room with a book on your head. Can you do it? Now try with two books, when you’ve mastered that see how many you can manage!
A few blankets and tablecloths can create the most wonderful indoor den. Drape blankets over chairs and clothes-dryers and add cushions for comfort. Take some colouring books, music and a torch and camp out, in!
Ask your buddy to describe something in the room without saying the name of the object. Ask them to describe it carefully and try to guess what it is.
Use the rotten weather to hone your science skills. Predict how much rain will fall and put a cup outside to measure the rainfall. Time how much rain falls in half an hour.
Use flashlights to create shadows of different objects on plain pieces of paper. Trace around the shadows. Now colour in and decorate!
Give an ice cube to each child and ask them to try to stop it from melting for as long as possible. (This activity must be supervised). The person with the last piece of unmelted ice cube wins.
